Stop the construction of the ‘uninvited’ Anin coal plant at once

On September 26 and 27, 2021, Korea Beyond Coal (KBC) gathered in Gangneung with Gangneung citizens, demanding an end to the construction of Gangneung Anin Coal Power Plant and calling for Korea's plan on early coal phase-out. Despite the global de-coal flow, the construction of Anin Coal Thermal Power Co., Ltd., is expected to be completed in 2023, with a total of two units (2,080 MW).

On the 26th, seminars for Gangneung citizens were held at Gangneung city council to explain the importance of coal phase-out in times of climate crisis and to discuss possible countermeasures.

The following day Korea Beyond Coal held a press conference at the main gate of the Anin coal plant construction site with Civic Committee Against Anin Coal Power Plant, calling for a halt to the construction. Civic groups and KBC collectively demanded that the “’uninvited’ Anin construction be stopped at once.” In fact, a survey of Gangneung citizens conducted by the Civic Committee Against Anin Coal Power Plant showed that 63.1% of the respondents were against the construction of Anin coal power plant. Moreover, KBC specifically requested that the government and the National Assembly take action to address Anin coal plant problems and provide a roadmap for 2030 coal phase-out as well as the legislation for the management of coal plants which are soon to lose their economic benefits.
